Low-speed pre-ignition (LSPI) is commonly found in small-capacity direct-injection turbocharged engines that operate at high pressure and temperature.
Actions are being taken for the global objective to reduce emissions and improve fuel economy, backed by regulations such as Euro 6 and soon to be Euro 7 (estimated 2025).
One way car manufacturers have started doing this is by engine downsizing but still wanting to maintain and improve power and torque. Between 1,000 and 2,000 RPM and just below peak torque is when the engine consumes the lowest amount of fuel. However, this ideal fuel economy region of the engine overlaps the region in which LSPI takes place.
Engines are designed to ignite fuel during controlled combustion. This process represents the burning of the air fuel mixture in the combustion chamber. The flame begins its journey at the spark plug and evenly spreads around the combustion chamber. LSPI represents uncontrolled combustion that happens outside of the normal events.
LSPI occurs when unburnt fuel in the cylinder ignites at the wrong time, not at the correct cycle point, hence it is out of time with the spark. This causes uncontrolled combustion due to elevated temperatures and pressures inside the engine, leading to pre-ignition which generally happens at lower engine speeds.
Our XF Premium LSPI 5w30 is a fully synthetic, premium gasoline engine oil formulated using the latest technology for OEM applications. It’s for use in petrol and hybrid engines and provides protection against LSPI and timing chain wear. This product is ideally suited for Opel Vauxhall and Asian manufacturers including Lexus, Nissan, Suzuki, and Toyota.
Our XF premium range features our Dynamic Fluid Technology, the unique superior lubrication technology developed and blended by Millers Oils. Dynamic Fluid Technology provides enhanced low-temperature flow when cold starting, instantly protecting the vital components of the engine from the very start of every journey. It delivers outstanding instant protection under hot and cold temperatures, whilst simultaneously reducing fuel consumption and lowering exhaust emissions. Compatible for use with biofuels, Dynamic Fluid Technology also provides exceptional performance and protection against deposits, sludge, and engine wear.
