  2. Discolouration — A healthy hydraulic oil is typically a clear, light yellow. Darkening, cloudiness or a murky appearance can point to contamination, oxidation, ageing additives or lower‑grade base oils.
  3. Dirty look— If you can physically see dirt, metal flakes or bits floating in the oil then it won’t be performing as it should and will likely cause wear and blockages.
  4. Accelerated seal degradation — Poor‑quality or inconsistent oils can attack seals, causing them to harden, swell or fail prematurely. If seals are wearing out faster than expected, the oil may be contributing to the problem.
