Why VW 504 00 / 507 00 Became the Industry Benchmark

By the mid-2000s Volkswagen Group made VW 504 00 / 507 00 the default “long-life” oil for virtually all its cars, and this dual specification remains the de facto standard for VW/Audi vehicles today. Several factors explain why 504 00 / 507 00 dominated the VAG (VW-Audi Group) aftermarket:

OEM Endorsement & Widespread Mandate

Volkswagen Group introduced VW 504 00 (petrol) and 507 00 (diesel) around 2004 as its new full-synthetic long-life spec. This became factory-fill and service-fill for most models. In fact, VW explicitly required almost all 2009+ TDI engines to use VW 507 00 oil. Similarly, nearly all VW/Audi petrol engines designed for long drains switched to VW 504 00. As a result, dealers and many service shops stock only VW 504 00 / 507 00 oils to cover the fleet.

Stringent OEM Testing

VW’s 504 00 / 507 00 standard is very demanding. Meeting VW’s approval involves a significant number of tests including engine wear, piston cleanliness, emissions system compatibility and fuel economy testing. In other words, oils must pass far more tests than just the ACEA C3 baseline, making the VW 504/507 badge a signal of high-quality, low-friction formulation. Because of these requirements, manufacturers invest heavily to have oils officially approved to the VW 504 00 / 507 00 specification.

Low-SAPS Emissions Compliance

In diesel applications, 507 00 mandated a mid-SAPS (ACEA C3) formulation specifically to protect after treatment systems such as Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF) to match strict emission rules. VW 504 00 / 507 00 oils minimise sulphated ash/phosphorus (relative to older VW diesel specifications) to prevent DPF clogging, a critical factor in modern diesels. The result is that an oil meeting 507 00 inherently works for Euro-4+ diesels (another reason VW insisted on it).

Fuel Economy & Extended Drains

Both specs emphasise fuel-saving formulations, with VW suggesting up to 2–3% fuel economy gains with VW 504 00 / 507 00 oils compared to previous specifications. By combining extended oil life with friction reduction, these oils cut operating costs, delivering better fuel economy while maintaining the long-life performance expected.

Millers Oils

Millers Oils offers a number of engine oils to meet the VW 504 00 / 507 00 specs in two viscosities, including the XF Premium C3 0W-30 and XF Premium C3 V 5W-30, both of which carry official VW approval. We also provide alternative products across our Trident Professional and EE Performance ranges that meet these specifications, allowing customers to choose an oil suited to their vehicle requirements and performance needs.
