Race Report: Thruxton

Millers Oils Ginetta racing cars on the track

If this past weekend was anything to go by, the 2021 Ginetta race season is set to be an absolute thriller after the stars of the Junior Championship and GT5 Challenge laid on four sensational races around the fastest circuit in the UK, Thruxton.

The high-speed Hampshire track has become synonymous for producing close, exciting slipstreaming racing and this year was no exception, with four drivers emerging victorious to each record their first ever victory in the Ginetta competition.

From a championship record grid of 27 Ginetta Juniors, it was Tom Edgar who earned the honour of being the first winner of 2021. A perfectly timed push on the final lap moved him to the front of a great five car battle to win, ahead of Seb Hopkins and Josh Miller.

It was a similar story in race two as five cars once again fought it out for victory. On this occasion it was the hugely impressive rookie Callum Voisin who took the victory in only his second ever car-race, followed home by Aston Millar and early championship leader Hopkins.

As part of their successful technical partnership with Ginetta, Millers Oils are once again supporting the latest winners of the Junior Scholarship. Robert de Haan made a brilliant start with a pair of rookie class podium finishes, while Maurice Henry is ready to bounce back after a tough debut.

In the GT5 Challenge, Josh Steed was the driver to beat after scoring a dominant double pole position in qualifying. A wrong tyre call of wets on a drying track cost him a shot in race one, but he made amends with a lights-to-flag win in race two.

John Bennett picked up a race victory and a second place to leave Thruxton at the head of the standings, while Junior graduate Will Aspin impressed with a double podium of his own. Within the mammoth 33 car entry, there were also class wins for Harry Mangion, Bal Sidhu, Nick White, Marc Warren and Rupert Laslett.

The next round of the British Touring Car Championship comes in five weeks’ time at Snetterton in Norfolk, with the Juniors in action alongside the 2021 season opener for the Millers Oils Ginetta GT4 Super Cup.
