Millers Oils Challenger Scheme Winner is Crowned!

After weeks of anticipation, the Millers Oils Challenger Scheme reached its conclusion last week at a special event hosted by us, at the University of Derby. What started as an exciting initiative back in January, offering one talented driver a free entry into the JCW class of the 2025 Vertu MINI CHALLENGE, culminated in a day filled with motorsport insights, competitive sim racing, and industry expertise.

The journey started with an open application process for all registered JCW drivers, where they answered key questions about their racing experience and ambitions. From there, four drivers were shortlisted and interviewed by a panel over Zoom. But to add an extra twist, we introduced a wildcard entry, bringing the final number to five. These finalists then attended our exclusive selection event at the University of Derby, here’s how it all unfolded:

A Day Packed with Motorsport Action

The event brought together students, industry partners, Millers Oils representatives, and members of the MINI CHALLENGE team, creating the perfect setting for the final decision to be made. It was designed to be both engaging and insightful, a chance to get to know the drivers better while adding a fun and competitive edge to the selection process.

  • Meet & Greet: We kicked things off with an informal session, where the shortlisted drivers met with students, partners, and motorsport professionals. A perfect opportunity for networking, getting to know the competitors and soaking up the atmosphere.
  • Introduction to the MINI CHALLENGE & Millers Oils: Attendees were given a chat about both the MINI CHALLENGE series and Millers Oils. This session set the stage for the day, particularly for the students, offering insight into the championship and the key role lubricants play in motorsport performance.
  • Sim Racing Showdown: The drivers put their virtual skills to the test in an adrenaline-fueled sim racing session at Donington Park National Circuit. With just 10 laps of fuel, they had to set their best lap time. The competition was very close, with the winner only edging the fastest time by just two-tenths of a second!
  • Engineering Insights & Student Talks: In the engineering workshop, each driver shared their first-hand experience of racing a MINI, offering students a deeper understanding of the JCW car’s performance and technical aspects. It was a great way to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world motorsport applications.
  • Lubrication Matters Lecture: Industry expert, Mike McCabe delivered a lecture about how changes in vehicle design and usage impact engine oil performance and requirements. Students gained a broader understanding of lubrication technology, learning how oil requirements differ across petrol, diesel, and hybrid engines.
  • Q&A with the Drivers: The students then put the drivers in the hot seat with a lively Q&A session. From their biggest inspirations in motorsport to their long-term ambitions and what sets them apart as racers, no question was off-limits. It was an engaging way to wrap up the day, offering a deeper look into the mindset of these aspiring champions.

Choosing the Winner

With all activities wrapped up, it was decision time. The students played an active role in the selection process, providing ratings out of five on various aspects of the drivers’ performances throughout the day, after careful deliberation and discussion, the verdict was in…

Albert Webster was victorious!

What’s Next for Albert Webster?

As the Millers Oils Challenger Scheme Winner 2025, Albert will have his entry fee covered for the full JCW season and will also step into the role of  Millers Oils ambassador, representing the brand throughout all JCW events in the upcoming season.

With the 2025 season fast approaching, Albert’s focus will now shift to pre-season preparations, testing, and ensuring he’s in peak form. It’s a huge opportunity, and with the backing of Millers Oils, he’ll have the support he needs to push his limits and make his mark on the MINI CHALLENGE JCW grid.

Congratulations to Albert, and a huge thank you to all the competitors, students, and attendees who made the day such a success!
