Understanding Volkswagen Group Oil Specs

What is Volkswagen Group?

Volkswagen Group (often referred to as VAG) is one of the world’s leading automotive manufacturers and the largest carmaker in Europe. Its extensive portfolio includes Volkswagen, Škoda, SEAT / CUPRA, Audi, Bentley, Lamborghini, Bugatti and Porsche.

What are the main VW specs?

Volkswagen has developed its own oil specifications to meet the needs of its engines. The most common include:

508 00 / 509 00 – Ultra-low viscosity green coloured oils for modern engines

504 00 / 507 00 – Long-life oils for a wide range of petrol and diesel engines (including DPF)

502 00 / 505 00 – Earlier specifications for older engines (505 01 – Specifically for PD diesel engines)

How do the specs relate to Porsche?

Porsche is part of the Volkswagen Group, and while Porsche and VAG engines are engineered differently, there are generally Porsche approval equivalents to VW specifications. Porsche approvals are tested separately and must always be explicitly stated where required. The typical equivalents are:

508 00 / 509 00 – Porsche C20

504 00 / 507 00 – Porsche C30

Why VW approvals matter more than ACEA alone

ACEA (European oil standards) provide a general performance benchmark, but VW approvals go much further. VW approvals are:

  • Engine-specific (designed for particular technologies)
  • Tested in real VW engines
  • Stricter and more detailed than generic ACEA requirements

This means an oil can meet ACEA standards but still not be suitable for a VW engine, without the correct VW specification met.

Why are VW products the most expensive?

VW-approved oils are widely regarded as some of the most demanding in the industry.

They require:

  • Extensive engine testing
  • Strict performance criteria
  • The highest quality base oils and additives
  • Proven compatibility with emissions systems (e.g. DPFs)
  • Long-life durability

This higher level of testing and validation is reflected in the cost, but it also delivers greater protection, performance, and peace of mind.

Why do Millers Oils do VW specific products where other companies merge approvals?

While some oils claim to cover multiple approvals, dedicated VW-specific formulations are designed to precisely meet the requirements of each specification.

This ensures:

  • Optimal performance for each engine type
  • Full compliance with manufacturer standards
  • No compromise between conflicting requirements

It’s about delivering the right oil for the job, not a one-size-fits-all solution.

How do I know which products a VAG specific?

Millers Oils products designed specifically for Volkswagen Group applications are typically identified with a “V” in the product name (particularly in newer products) e.g. EE Performance Engine Oil C5 V 0W-20.

Always check the product web page or technical data sheet to confirm the exact VW specification and approval where applicable for complete confidence.

What do I use for my vehicle under warranty or extended warranty approved use car?

For vehicles under warranty, whether that’s manufacturers or extended, it’s essential to use oils that meet the exact specification requirements, as well as holding an approval.

The XF Premium range offers approved products such as XF Premium Engine Oil C3 V 5W-30, that meet VW specifications, ensuring:

  • Full compliance with warranty requirements
  • Proven performance and protection
  • Peace of mind for both garages and customers

Can I use a newer VW spec oil in an older engine?

Not always. Some newer specifications are not backward compatible.

For example, VW 508 00 / 509 00 oils (0W-20) should only be used in engines specifically designed for these low-viscosity formulations. By contrast, VW 507 00 is required for diesel engines fitted with after-treatment systems such as DPFs, but is often backward compatible with many older diesel engines that do not have a DPF.

Always check compatibility before substituting specifications, using the wrong oil can lead to reduced protection or engine issues

How can I quickly find the right oil?

The easiest way is to use the WHICHOIL? look up tool which matches the correct products to the exact vehicle and engine specification, removing the guesswork and saving time.
