Race Preview: Thruxton

The 2021 Ginetta race season finally gets underway this weekend, with the Ginetta Junior Championship and GT5 Challenge taking to the track for some high-speed action at the fastest circuit in the UK, Thruxton.

As Millers Oils and Ginetta continue in their third consecutive year as technical partners, the season opener in Hampshire will see a superb tally of more than 50 Ginetta G40 race cars taking to the track – all fuelled by the exclusive ‘Ginetta Tech by Millers Oils’ range of lubricants.

Last season saw history made as Tom Lebbon won the Ginetta Junior drivers’ title at the first attempt in his Millers Oils-backed car. He’s the latest young star to graduate from the series, with former drivers including F1 star Lando Norris and W Series champion Jamie Chadwick.

27 cars are set to line-up on the grid this weekend, a record number for a Ginetta Junior season opener, with a host of the leading rookies from 2020 coming back for a title challenge. Those include race-winner Josh Miller and Seb Hopkins, who finished fifth in the final standings.

Other returning talents to look out for include Tom Edgar, Aston Millar and Freddie Tomlinson, while another great group of rookies are making their racing debuts this year. Amongst those are Ginetta Junior Scholarship winners Robert de Haan and Maurice Henry, who will sport Millers Oils liveries.

The Ginetta GT5 Challenge meanwhile has become renowned for producing some of the most exhilarating one-make racing in UK motorsport in recent years. It looks set to produce more of the same this time around as a great entry of more than 30 cars take to the grid.

Amongst the leading talents are some returning front-runners from 2020, Conner Garlick, John Bennett and Magnus Kriklywi. Connor Grady and Josh Steed are former podium finishers too, while Will Rochford, Haytham Qarajouli and Will Aspin graduate from the Juniors.

Yorkshire, the home county of both Millers Oils and Ginetta, is well represented on the grids this weekend too. Amongst the local talents to cheer on are Juniors Maxwell Dodds, Zac Meakin and Joe Warhurst, plus GT5 stars Max Coates and Bren Maude.
