Meet The Team – Debbie Smyth – Sales Office Manager

Debbie Smyth has recently joined the Millers Oils team as the Sales Office Manager! To introduce Debbie and carry on our Meet The Team series, we interviewed her to get to know her a bit better…

Tell us about yourself.

Cornwall is where I grew up and I still have family there so try to get back as often as I can.

I ran away to sea at 19 and worked on a Princess Cruise ship firstly sailing along the Alaskan coast and then round the Caribbean via the Panama Canal – quite an experience for a 19-year-old!

I fell into sales by accident when I was in my thirties and have loved it ever since, selling everything from water coolers to container padlocks, via Lexus promotional days and agricultural machinery advertising.

What is your role at Millers Oils?

I am the Sales Office Manager, this means I work with our Internal Sales team and Customer Services.  We are a small team and I am new to the industry so I am at the bottom of  a steep learning curve!  I’ve only recently joined Millers Oils and can honestly say I’ve never worked anywhere where everyone was as friendly and welcoming as they are here.

Why did you want to join the Millers Oils team?

I was ready for a new challenge and when I saw the advert for the role I knew that it would be my perfect job.

What is your go-to productivity trick? 

Lists. Lists of lists!  If it isn’t on a list it probably isn’t happening.  Combining a To Do list with a good strong black coffee and 100% focus (not easy in a very busy Sales office!) is my way of really getting stuff done.

What are your favourite things to do on the weekend?

My kitchen is my happy place. I love cooking and find it very relaxing.  TikTok has been an unexpected source of inspiration, especially for more unusual recipes.  If I’m not cooking in the Summer, I will be in the garden; sometimes weeding and watering, more often with a glass of wine and a good book.

What profession did you want to do when you were a child?

I wanted to be a nurse, although I don’t think I’d have been very good at it!

What is something you want to achieve by the end of the year?

I am trying to learn modern calligraphy so I’d really like to be better at that, but I need a lot of practice.
