Ginetta Preview: Silverstone

With the Millers Oils Ginetta GT4 SuperCup taking a weekend off, it’s the Ginetta Junior Championship and Ginetta GT Academy that will be providing the action this weekend at the world-famous Silverstone circuit (25/26 September).

After skipping the Croft event last weekend, the Juniors return with the promise of sensational wheel-to-wheel competition around Silverstone’s short 1.64 mile National layout, having produced some memorable races there over the years.

Just eight points separate the top two drivers in the championship standings, with Aston Millar leading the way after impressively finishing every race this season inside the top six. Liam McNeilly is hot on his heels, having scored three wins so far across the campaign.

One of the most impressive drivers this year has been Callum Voisin, with an unbeaten tally of seven race victories ensuring he holds the rookie class points lead. Ginetta Junior scholar Robert de Haan is another rookie to have starred, with a maiden pair of overall wins last time out at Thruxton.

The ultra-competitive field features numerous potential contenders for race wins, including 10-time podium finisher Seb Hopkins, Will Jenkins and Josh Rowledge. Yorkshire’s own Freddie Tomlinson, Max Dodds and Joe Warhurst will be aiming to make their mark at their home circuit this weekend.

The GT Academy meanwhile was launched this year as Ginetta’s new entry-level series for prospective GT racers, with a first appearance on the British Touring Car Championship support package this weekend marking the penultimate meeting of their 2021 season.

In the headline GTA class, the driver to beat this season has been Toby Trice. Eight class wins in nine races have given him the chance to win the title this weekend, though regular podium finishers Wes Pearce and Roy Alderslade will be aiming to stop that from happening.

The series also has a rookie class for new entrants to motorsport. Angus Whiteside is on course to win that class title, with a superb campaign so far featuring four overall race wins. Gilbert Yates, Darren Leung and Edward Acres are also ones to watch in that class.

Each championship will have one race televised live on ITV4 and the ITV Hub on Sunday.
